Steve Barry Quartet

Born from after-class jam sessions at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where Barry is a lecturer, Barry’s new quartet features three of Sydney’s finest emerging jazz talents in NZ-export Ben Lerner (alto), bassist Nick Jansen and drummer George Greenhill.

Barry’s compositions for the group are steeped in the swing, lyricism, and joyous, bubbling, fizzy exchanges so unique to the jazz quartet format. Echoes of Lennie Tristano’s twisting melodic lines and Wayne Shorter’s rich harmonic palate are evident throughout, merging with Barry’s background in the timbres, pianism and forms of 20th century music.
